Awilda Sterling (Santurce, 1947)

Artist, educator, dancer and independent coreographer. She got her bachelor’s degree from the School of Fine Arts and Desing of Puerto Rico and pursued studies at the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute, in New York. With an experimental and contemporary aesthetic, her work incorporates languages from folkloric and Afro Caribbean dance. She was a founding member of Pisotón, the first experimental dance collective inn Puerto Rico, and collaborates with various independent artists. In 1985 she was the recipient of an experimental dance grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and was a United States Artists Fellow inn 2010.
