Saint Virgin of Montserrat by José Orta
Wood carving by José Orta, member of one of the most recognized families of carvers in Puerto Rico. 7 x 4 x 4 inches.
Based on lore and church documents, Our Lady of Montserrat appeared to a farmer near Hormigueros, Puerto Rico, when he invoked her name as he was about to be attacked by a bull. Immediately, the beast fell to its knees and brought its forehead to the ground, as if in prayer. In gratitude, the farmer built and dedicated a church to her. She is the patron saint of pregnant women.
